The advantage of the Ultima II filter is it's non-organic filter media with properties that encourage bacteria growth. Research led to three different types of media designed to grow and hold ammonia oxidizing bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria. Just one cubic foot of these three media has over two million tiny shapes. One cubic foot of Ultima II media is equal to 750 square feet of surface area. Cleaning is done by internal jets backwashing.

These professional grade filters come standard with an Air Backwash system. Available in a variety of popular sizes filtering environments from 2,000 gallons all the way up to 30,000 gallons. The Dynamax blower aggressively agitates the debris collected in the media bed and suspends it in the water column which is easily backwashed to waste. With the blower this unit will use about 30 gallons per backwash. The Model AD4000 will support up to 85 pounds of fish while feeding once per day. The AD4000 is excellently suited for medium to moderately sized indoor large volume aquariums or more heavily stocked laboratory research applications. Also works exceptionally well for medium to moderately sized aquatic environments for alternative species exhibits. High quality quick disconnect unions are included.

The Aquadyne EcoSphere filtration systems are excellently suited to filter ponds and other aquatic habitats. Both models come standard with an Air Backwash system that performs just like the larger Aquadyne systems except in a small footprint package for smaller water features, ponds, aquaponic systems, quarantine systems, or other small aquatic habitats ranging in the 1000 to 4000 gallon class. These systems offer an efficient water flow. You can backwash with as little as 15 gallons of water. They include a 1.5" control head with 1.5" ports in/out, with (3) ea. 1.5" self-sealing unions included. These systems are also suitable for an indoor, large volume aquarium filter. These units are also an excellent starter for small laboratory research or aquaponic applications.

If you should ever have to replace the spring check valve, it is no big deal. Just unscrew the top and bottom of the valve, remove the valve body, replace with a new body and re-hand tighten the two unions. Total repair time is under 2 minutes!

Simply move 2 push-pull type valves and the water flows through the multiport valve to allow for backwashing, rinse, etc. Then move the push-pull valves back to their original position and water flows through the filter as normal but unrestricted. Water enters the lower port and exits the upper port going back to the pond. Why is all of this important? It allows you to run a smaller more energy efficient pump to do the same job.
